Though Nuwara Eliya isn’t connected by the railway line, the city of Nanu Oya 9km south of Nuwara Eliya is connected by the main highland railway line. The rail road is even more spectacular than the motor road: the path is cut around the mountains, drilled trough the hills and bridged over the rivers. From Kandy to the terminal point of Badulla are seamless tea plantations. Such are the elevations on which the Highland Railway Line was laid, it reveals views that wouldn’t be seen on the motorable road. The two diesel powered locomotive trains called Udarata Menika (Sinhala: Highland belle) and Podi Menike (Little belle) are run daily from Colombo to Badulla passing Nanu Oya as well as the highland attractions of Hatton, Haputale, Diyatalawa and Bandarawela and Ella.

Grand Hotel Nuwara Eliyahas still retained the colonial architecture it inherited since the time building was the hill country residence of Sir Edward Barnes, the British Colonial Governor (1824-1831) in Ceylon. The new wing of the hotel too was built in the traditions of Victorian architecture.

Though the rooms of the golf wing aren’t furnished with such antiquity, those too retain the colonial grandeur of the era. The golf wing overlooks the scenic Nuwara Eliya Golf Course.
