The Swiss hospitality chain Mövenpick Hotels and Resorts will begin its first ever hotel, Mövenpick Hotel Colombo, the 19-floor, 180-room hotel, in a half an acre property in Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka  in January 2014.

Mövenpick Hotels and Resorts President and CEO Jean Gabriel Peres has recently visited the country to sign the management agreement with Softlogic Holdings to build the 200-room five-star property in Kollupitiya area of Colombo.

Mövenpick Hotel Colombo – being designed with sustainable build and operating requirements – will feature contemporary architecture and room sizes vary from 36sqm for standard rooms up to 70sqm for a suite.

Alongside one speciality restaurant will be an all-day dining venue, rooftop bar and nightclub, and guests will be able to unwind in the fitness centre, spa and pool and receive 24-hour room service, while executives will be able to avail of the Boardroom and Business Centre.

“With the growing business traveller in mind as well as holiday guests, Mövenpick Colombo will be cozy, warm, exquisite, premium quality, and an upscale five-star hotel,” Peres has told the Daily FT in an exclusive interview.

The executive said that Sri Lanka tourism has the potential to be successful as Thailand is today as hospitality is natural for Sri Lankans.

“Sri Lanka’s natural hospitality and warmth is legendary. Sri Lanka is a gorgeous country. Following the end of the conflict Sri Lanka has great potential for the future,” Peres has said.

The hotelier has noted the cleanliness of the capital city and has said that the country has vastly improved.

Peres has said that he was impressed with the quality of new hotels and the entry of several new brands in Colombo and encouraged by the support infrastructure as well as real estate.

The global brand is also looking for opportunities to manage a beach resort to complement and expand its offering in Sri Lanka.

Architectural concept of Casa Colombo
Casa Colombo is a retro-cool [at once appeals to the latest fashion yet retain a nostalgic revival of the age old style] 12-room boutique hotel set up following a restoration of a magnificent heritage propertyof Colombo: a 200 year old Moorish mansion. While the prominent features of the heritage property, i.e. ornate balconies and window awnings intricate mosaic floors, molded ceilings, elaborate columns and arches have been retained, contemporary furniture, upholstering and feature have been blended in. Colors are vibrant; floor is of polished cement; lighting is neon; metal fitting consists of brushed steel and copper; drapes are raw silk; furniture is made of tropical hard wood.
Casa Colombo’s juxtaposition between old and new is heavenly: it is an extraordinary, unusual and exceptional example of a boutique hotel.
As the newspaper Sunday Times published in Colombo, Sri Lanka put it, Casa Colombo is an opulent and eclectic hotel, where old and new blend in startling contrast. Travel+ Leisure found Casa Colombo blends edgy contemporary with classic elegance effortlessly.

Casa Colombo Sri Lanka

Casa Colombo, one of the most remarkable contemporary hotels was entirely reinterpreted by a talented Sri Lanka designer Lalin Jinasena. I think Geoffrey Bawa has a worthy successor who knows how to draw his inspiration from the teacher’s genius, to renew the Singhalese creation and architecture. A name that will rank, I am sure, amongst the greatest names of the international scene.

Colombo Rooms

Friday, May 18th, 2012

Colombo Rooms of Riolta Sri Lanka Hotel Guide is a guide to the whole range of rooms available in Sri Lanka Holidays in Colombo: star class hotels of international standing, mid range hotels, budget hotel and home stay.
To begin your Sri Lanka Holidays, there is no better location than the capital city of  Sri Lanka, Colombo.
Here are the main reasons:
(a) Beginning your Sri Lanka Holidays in Colombo is gives all of you a kick start. Colombo affords the opportunity to witness the modern murals at Kaleniya Royal Temple. The famous murals depict the major milestones of Sinhalese Buddhist civilization of Sri Lanka. The murals build up a brief pictorial narrative of the unbroken chronicled history of Sri Lanka since 543 BC. Kaleniya Buddhist Temple is a mini encyclopedic springboard to the exploration of the historical, cultural and archeological destinations of Sri Lanka Holidays.
(b) Colombo is the main airport, main harbor, commercial center, emporium and heart of main metropolitan district also called Colombo in Sri Lanka.
Colombo is the city to arrange your Sri Lanka Holidays, should a holiday package hadn’t been already bought prior to the arrival at  CMB Colombo Bandaranayake Airport at Katnuayake, Negombo, 37km north of the heart of Colombo,
(c) Colombo offers the best chance to buy your equipment, medication, clothes that you may have forgotten pack up. Since Sri Lanka is an underdeveloped country, buying even regular stuff available in developed countries could turn out to be a time killer.
(d) Colombo is the main hub of transportation of Sri Lanka Holidays: the most important main roads (designated with the initial A followed by a number) spoke out of Colombo. For eg. A1 is Colombo-Kandy  road; A2 is Colombo-Galle southern coastal road; A3 is Colombo-Puttalama coastal road. A map of Sri Lanka can be bought on arrival at CMB Colombo Bandaranayake Airport at Katnuayake, Negombo airport.
Colombo Rooms: Hotels, Guest Houses, Rest Houses and Home stay.

Colombo has a fair share of accommodation options. The heart of Colombo city called Fort is numbered Colombo 1. Other suburbs are numbered from 2 to 15.
The other suburbs located within the district of Colombo aren’t numbered. For example, Mount Lavina located mere 10km south of  Colombo nor Moratuwa 15 km south of Colombo along the main A3 Galle Road are numbered though those are densely populated main cities of the Colombo district.

Shangri-La Colombo

Shangri-La Colombo
Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts to Open a New Hotel in Colombo, Sri Lanka in 2014
4 Jan 2011
Hong Kong-based Shangri-La Asia Limited announced the purchase of six acres of government land facing the Galle Face green promenade, a prominent landmark in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The development will be a multi-use complex with high-end retail facilities, deluxe apartments and a 700-key luxury hotel to open in early 2014. The purchase marks the entry of the hotel group into Sri Lanka, often referred to as “The Pearl of the Indian Ocean.”
Shangri-La is also planning to develop a second property, a 161 rooms and 20 villas beach side resort on the southern coast of  Sri Lanka Holidays Hambantota  , to open in 2013.
“Sri Lanka is a country of unsurpassed natural beauty, rich in cultural heritage, and above all it is well recognized for its warm and hospitable population. The local government is fully committed to rebuilding the economy following the end of three decades of conflict and we believe that Shangri-La will be able to assist in positioning the country as a prime global tourist destination. Both Shangri-La hotels strategically fit into the group’s ongoing expansion plans to link the Indian subcontinent and our South East Asia developments,” said Greg Dogan, president and chief executive officer of Shangri-La International Hotel Management Ltd.

To Open A New Hotel In Colombo, Sri Lanka In 2014
‘The entry of the Shangri-La global network is an endorsement of the economic prospects that Sri Lanka has gained since His Excellency the President, Mahinda Rajapaksa ending the long drawn conflict, and accelerating long term infrastructure development, through the creation of a stable economic environment while promoting a rural-centric development strategy. It also marks the beginning of a new journey of a high level of Foreign Direct Investment that Sri Lanka needs in order to accelerate an economic growth in excess of eight percent and position Sri Lanka as an emerging middle income country in Asia’, commented the Secretary to the Treasury. The Secretary also confirmed that several of the world’s leading investors have expressed interest to undertake a wide range of investment activities in 2011.

Hong Kong-based Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts, one of the world’s premier hotel companies, currently owns and/or manages 72 hotels under the Shangri-La, Kerry and Traders brands, with a room inventory of over 30,000. Over four decades the group has established its brand hallmark of ‘hospitality from the heart.’ The group has a substantial development pipeline with projects in Canada, mainland China, India, Malaysia, Philippines, Mongolia, Qatar, Sri Lanka, Turkey and United Kingdom.

Sheraton Colombo

Sunday, November 6th, 2011

Sheraton Colombo, Sri Lanka Holidays
COLOMBO Nov 6 (Reuters) – Sheraton Hotels and Resorts, the largest Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide brand, will build a hotel in the Sri Lankan capital on land originally offered to a Chinese firm, a government official said on Sunday.
The island nation’s junior economic minister said the government has completed negotiations with Sheraton to allocate the land, earlier offered to China National Aero Technology Import and Export Corporation (CATIC).
“The negotiations with Sheraton are successfully over and we have agreed to give (the) CATIC land,” Lakshman Yapa Abeywardene told Reuters.
However, he declined to comment on the amount of the investment or extent of land the government had agreed to offer Sheraton under a 99-year lease.
Last month, Sri Lanka annulled a $500 million investment deal with CATIC after it refused to sell the beach front land outright to the state-run Chinese conglomerate as agreed earlier.
The CATIC deal was among the largest foreign investments since Sri Lanka won a quarter-century civil war in 2009, and analysts say its cancellation has created concerns among potential investors.
The land deal was cancelled after the main opposition United National Party (UNP) questioned it in a parliament dominated by President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s ruling party.
Officially, Rajapaksa questioned why the land for the hotel on the colonial-era Galle Face seafront grounds was being sold instead of given on a long-term lease. CATIC balked at the change in terms, having already paid $54.5 million.
The government says it is negotiating to give CATIC another property, and is in talks to lease the land in front of Galle Face Green it offered earlier to another party, which it declined to name, to build a hotel.
However, the government has not changed the terms of a similar $500 million hotel, shopping and apartment project with Shangri-La Asia Ltd , which paid $125 million to buy 10 acres next to the 6 acres CATIC wanted.
CATIC is primarily a weapons manufacturer, but has other interests, including in hotels.
